Weekly Store Update: 13 March

What do you think about daylight saving time? As we're morning people it's really jarring twice a year. You know though, who needs that hour of sleep anyway? It just gives us an earlier start to every wonderful day! Hey, it was another great week here with lots of restock and new items too. Why not pop in to see our March board game giveaway winners and check out what else is going on around here!

INTRO

Do you get groggy from that time change? Well, nothing like games to perk you right up! For our new readers I'm Eric, and Wendy and I run Stone Valley Games. This newsletter is our way to discuss both local and world-wide gaming news of interest that popped up last week. It also provides our customers, both local and remote, some information on the going's on around here so everyone feels like part of the action! At the bottom of this newsletter we show you our restocks, new items, and preorders added to the store last week. Easy enough, right? Let's get to it!

BOARD GAME GIVEAWAY

Our March board game giveaway is over! As we teamed with Meeple, Myself and I for this month's giveaway we had two copies of Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition to give away instead of one!

So, the two lucky winners are: Craig W. from Phoenix, AZ and Clay B. from right here in Huntsville, AL. In all the time we've been doing giveaways we've never had a local winner - so that's pretty exciting. Congratulations winners!!

Hey, if you didn't win this time around...there's always next month! That's right, stay right here and in a few short weeks we'll let you know all about April's giveaway!

SOME LITTLE THINGS

We tweaked a few things in the webstore last week. The most noticeable is the auto-fill feature in the search functionality. I'm still not completely happy with how it looks but figured I could work on that later. Most important part is it seems to be working correctly.

We have also fiddled with the in-store point of sale system, and now everything is so much easier during check out. What used to take several minutes is now just a few clicks and we're there. There's just one more strange thing - the receipt. While we can email or text the receipt, the system requires its own special printer to print a receipt... and they are sold out of these printers. It's always something, right?! Everyone has been great though, and email / texting receipts is how we had been doing it before anyway.

One final small change in the shop, we moved the in-store demo games to storage so there's more room for the Roleplaying Games / Collectible Card Games section. As we're so limited on space right now anyway, those games really couldn't be played the way we're set up. Once we eventually get into a larger storefront, we'll get them shelf space again as folks will be able to try them out.

ICE ICE BABY

We put the finishing touches on the most recent package of games for the Alaska school district we support and had that heading up there last week. Spread over several schools ranging quite a distance, they run gaming groups and the beauty of board games is that several are very helpful in history and science classes too.

In any case, while out in Fairbanks our contact there visited the World Ice Carving Championships and sent us a few photos. We just had to share them with you.

He told us that some of these ice sculptures were two stories tall! That's absolutely amazing! I don't know much about ice sculpting, but I know what I like...and I like that! Thanks again for the wonderful photos Doug!

PRINT AND PLAY

It's public service announcement time! Have you seen this from Asmodee yet? In the spirit of hunkering down during the cold winter months they have set up a site with over 20 Print and Play games including popular titles like Catan, Carcassonne, Dixit, Unlock, and more!

Not only that, but they all have all these really neat and fun add-ons to the games you already know and love. Like, there's solo player expansions for 7 Wonders Duel, Five Tribes, and Smallworld! All sorts of neat additions to all sorts of titles. Plus, drawing and coloring sheets too - several fun and interesting activities are there at your fingertips.

If you want to check it all out, just head on over to their site.

Hi Eric! I think you meant for the title of this newsletter to be March 13, instead of February 13 🙂 I was confused as I was looking at the links on the website and the latest I saw was March 6. Then, I went back to my email and I see that it said Feb 13 from the Mar 12 email 🙂 Thanks again for running a great business and provided great customer service and products!

Ha! Thanks Mark – that’s absolutely correct, should have been March 13. Well, I’ve gone and fixed it… wow, what a “typo”!!! Thanks! –Eric
