weekly store update 211017

Weekly Store Update: 17 October

Do you ever just stand amongst your games and breathe all that wonderfulness in? Mindfulness is awesome, but I think 'game breathing exercises' are even better! Another week in the rearview, and what a week it was. New games and restocks in, and a spattering of preorders too - many of them releasing in the next few weeks. We also drew for our "Scary" giveaway winner, and we have more to share too!

INTRO

Welcome to our newsletter! I'm Eric, and Wendy and I own and operate Stone Valley Games. We don't have time to play very often, but we still take time to appreciate the glory of games when we can! If you're new to the newsletter, this top portion contains some gaming news we picked up during the week. However, if you want to skip the wall of words you can jump down to the bottom of the post and see the restocks, new items, and preorders we laid in last week.

BOARD GAME GIVEAWAY

We drew the winner for our "scary" giveaway! Why is it scary? Because each of the four games we gave away has a horror theme, just in time for Halloween! Included was the space adventure Escape the Dark Sector, the latest edition of the fun and highly rated Zombicide 2nd Edition, the creepily thematic The Night Cage, and the trick-taking card game Shardhunters. That's over $200 in games, and the one winner who took all was Corey from Lawrenceville, GA. Congratulations Corey!!

If you didn't win don't fret, we'll have another giveaway heading your way in November! Stay tuned to these weekly newsletters for updates!

TURN THE PAGE

For our long-time readers, you know we've only recently started carrying the 5th Edition, or 5E Dungeons & Dragons products. I was hesitant to jump too far into it, as the quick procession from 3E to 5E was dizzying and we were concerned we'd have a shelf full of books when the next edition was announced.

However, our customers kept asking and I realized I didn't need to "retail gatekeep" something so popular, so we brought it in. Then, during the D&D Celebration 2021 that aired a few weeks ago we found out that...there are new core rulebooks coming in 2024 to celebrate the game's 50th anniversary.

Like...of course there is. Well, to be fair, 5E will be 10 years old in 2024 so I guess it's about time. Interestingly though, these new core books are supposed to be fully compatible with the current 5E products. Intriged, we're curious on how that will play out.

LOOMING PRICE INCREASE

Our friends over at Eagle-Gryphon Games announced an imminent price increase in some of their Vital Lacerda designed games. They told us these titles are lined up for reprint, and since their last printings production costs have risen. Combining that with ocean freight costs that have increased exponentially, they are forced to slightly increase the MSRP of titles when they are reprinted. It isn't ideal, but is a direct reflection of the current state of the world's rising costs.

These titles will increase in price on November 10th, 2021:

WHAT'S THE PLAN?

In what's going to become one of our longest running stories, we have another update on our future store build. The final draft of the plans are complete! The architect and her protégé, who also happens to be her son, stopped by the store to go over the plans with us.

Now, normally they don't make site visits...but when they researched us and found out what we were all about they had to stop by...and see all the games! Well, of course they couldn't leave empty handed, so they dropped the plans with us and left with a happy bundle of fun.

Now they have to completely flesh out the design, adding all the necessary detail required for structural architecture. Maybe a week or two more, and the final plans will be ours!

I have to say though, initially I was a bit annoyed with what I thought was a slow roll by the architects. Things seemed to be taking so much time! However, after checking out some pricing around town I'm beginning to not mind more time added to this project. At least until these lumber prices get more realistic, it's absolutely bonkers out there right now! In any case, it's not like we're going anywhere. Literally. So we'll take it all in stride and move forward at the pace it takes. Let's not force anything.
